Be. The. Goat.
Welcome to the P.A.C.E Trail Race Series where we host a variety of events in beautiful British Columbia. We are a small, family owned series who's goal is simple. To offer runners a professional, memorable, scenic and challenging race series that feels inclusive, welcoming and rewarding.
We work hard to keep our events on the 'grass roots' side of things. We are all about those special handmade, home grown touches; apple pies, jams, handmade ceramic finishers medals, handmade stained glass, coffee (roasted by the race director and her husband) and ensuring runners have an experience that feels more like coming home or a family reunion.
We have strong environmental & community values, such as composting, recycling and we support local charities and donate a portion of our race fees back to the trail groups that build, maintain and advocate for the trails we are so privileged to enjoy.
In terms of our courses - our series is very diverse. We have 3 totally different races that we host in the Okanagan and 1 race we host in the high alpine mountains in the Kootenays. The terrain and landscapes are all unique and not one race course will leave you feeling like the other. They do have a few things in common, however. They're all really challenging and scenic, combine all the best trail networks each area has to offer.
We want to thank you for taking time to visit the P.A.C.E. Trail Runs website and we hope to welcome you into the #pacefamily in 2023.

Broken Goat is located in the beautiful Kootenay Rockies Region of British Columbia and one of Canada's highest cities.
The 25km & 52km race starts at an elevation of 1574m and runners summit various peaks & ridges along the way. The highest peak being Old Glory Mountain at 2376m. The entire 12km course takes place on Red Mountain which peaks at 2072m at the summit.
The Broken Goat is so much more than just a race. It's a weekend set around majestic mountains, filled with hight alpine trail running, craft beer, amazing food and cherished company.
In September 2009 my husband and I were married in this small Kootenay town. We loved it there so much, we wanted to share it with others and in July of 2015 Broken Goat was born. Trent and I now look forward to celebrating our "new" anniversary with our team, volunteers and racers from all over the land every summer. xo
Our team would like to acknowledge and respect that Broken Goat takes place on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the sngaytskstx (Sinixt) People and we celebrate and honour all the history that exists upon these amazing lands.

Events: 12km/25km/54km The Broken Goat 12km course is a challenging route that starts off at the base of Red Mountain Resort and quickly heads straight up dreadhead - a super steep single track trail that climbs relentlessly up to the top of Red Mountain. We promise it will be worth the effort and following the first climb, runners can expect to run on some of the best single track Rossland has to offer! Mega views. Mega fun! |
The Broken Goat 25km course follows the same start as the 52km course and includes the summit of Mount Plewman and the lower section of Red Mountain. It is a challenging, point to point race that traverses along the beautiful high alpine “7 Summits” trail and Unnecessary Ridge. The majority of the course cruises at an average elevation of 2000m (6550ft) and takes runners along lofty ridge lines between Nancy Greene Summit and Red Mountain, offering 360 degree views.
Like the 52km route, runners must also be comfortable self-supporting themselves until they reach Grey MTN, which is approximately 12 km into the course. Here they will access to an aid station.
Broken Goat 52km is one of BC's most challenging and scenic ultra's. This is a point to point route which takes place on the beautiful “7 Summits” high alpine trail and accesses several peaks & ridges along the way.
Runners will have beautiful 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains and run on a mix of buff single track and technical rocky & rooty trails. Participants must be prepared for a long and strenuous journey in remote alpine terrain and also must be comfortable self-supporting themselves until they reach Grey Mountain - 23km into the race.
The race proceeds along the peaks and ridges in the following order: Mt Plewman (2241m/7350ft), Old Glory Mtn (2376m/7800ft), Unnecessary Ridge (2100m/6,888ft), Record Ridge (1760m/5,772ft), Granite Mtn (2036m/6700ft), Red Mtn (1591m/5218ft). Approximately 46km is on beautiful alpine single-track. There is a challenging descent down Molly's FSR which links the 7Summits trail into "Pay Dirt" trail which leads runners very close to the finish line before the final push up Dreadhead on Red Mountain. This 1.7km (457m/1500ft) climb up to the top of Red Mountain is often the crux for 54km runners this late in the race. For those who make it to the summit - they will enjoy the remaining 10km on flowy singletrack into the finish and then it's officially beer time!

Mandatory Gear & Check
This is a remote point to point race racers need to be prepared for varying temperatures - think in terms of being stuck - if you are forced to spend extra time out in the weather, you will be much better off if you have carried extra clothing & fuel to help. A sprained ankle for instance could mean a long, slow painful limp into the nearest aid station, possibly in cold rain. Hypothermia can be very dangerous, especially on tired bodies with no reserves left for generating heat.
Runners must carry the following gear with them:
- Lightweight jacket for variable weather and cold temperatures.
- Emergency Blanket
Runners must start the race with the following fuel & hydration requirements:
Aid 1 is almost the half way mark for 52km runners, therefore we have the following requirements in place for your safety. These are subject to change as we assess weather leading into the event.
- Hydration pack or handheld water bottles equalling a minimum of 1.5 litres.
- Minimum 400 calories.
The following is "recommended" gear:
- Cap/toque (some areas are exposed to sun) and it will keep your head warm in cold temperatures).
- Extra warm layer in addition to a jacket, like a thin long sleeve base layer.
- Cell phone: portions of the course has cell coverage.
- Bear Spray.
- Gloves.
- Sunglasses.
- Sunscreen and lip balm.
- High energy fuel and drink.
GEAR CHECK
10 Essentials:
We encourage everyone to always carry the 10 Essentials for backcountry safety in your pack - whether you’re out training or adventuring on your own or with friends, or participating in one of our marked races, you can never predict what might happen. Learn more about the 10 Essentials in this article by Emelee Outdoors.
52k runners must keep all mandatory gear until they are out of higher elevations and reach Aid Station #3 at the bottom of Red Mountain Resort.
25k runners, however, must keep their mandatory gear with them during the whole race.
This is for your safety and race organizers reserve the right to adapt or change the mandatory list/rules last minute.
Please ensure you attend the mandatory race briefing for any last minute changes. Thank you for your cooperation
