BROKEN GOAT

POSTPONED TO JULY 15 - 17, 2022
REGISTRAITON OPENING ON JANUARY 16, 2022

#bethegoat2022
52km, 25km, 12km + 3 day Stage Race

Broken Goat is nestled among the mountains in the quaint town of Rossland, B.C., one of Canada's highest cities. The 52km & 25km course follow the 7summits trail which is a spectacular point to point single-track traverse of the Rossland Range. It is challenging, adventurous, has spectacular views and is a true epic experience, making it the crown jewel of the Rossland trail network. The race starts at an elevation of 1574m and 50km runners will summit 4 peaks along the way and 2 ridges varying in elevation & peaking at Old Glory Mountain at 2376m. 25km runners will summit 1 peak and 1 ridge with elevation peaking at Mount Plowman at 2241m. The entire 12km course & Vertical Climb takes place on Red Mountain which peaks at 2072m at the summit.

This event is so much more than just a race. It's a weekend set around majestic mountains and is filled with epic trail running, craft beer, amazing food and great company.

In September 2009 my husband and I were married in this small Kootenay town. We celebrated with close friends, family and planned a full weekend of trail running, mountain biking, hiking and golf around our ceremony. We loved it there so much, we wanted to continue to share it with others. So naturally, in the fall of 2014 we came up with a race concept after a fun scouting trip with the PACE team and voila! In July of 2015 Broken Goat was born. Trent and I now enjoy celebrating our "new" anniversary with our team, volunteers and racers from all over the land.

Course

Broken Two Goats   (3 day stage race)

Dates: Friday July 16, Saturday July 17 & Saturday July 18
Distance: 89kms / 55.3 miles
Ascent: 4020m / 13,188 ft
Descent: 5020m / 16,470 ft

NEW for 2021! The inspiration behind the Broken Two Goats is driven by the PACE team's passion for stage racing, in particular parter racing, throughout the years and we all felt it would fun to create something that brings friends/family back together in a safe, yet meaningful way, considering all the challenges with COVID019.

  • There are no solo entries and you must run the stage race with a partner.
  • You must finish within 2 minutes of your partner to earn your official finish and qualify for prizing.
  •  We are offering limited spots (25 teams) for the inaugural year, with the long term vision to switch up some of the routes in years to follow.

52km. 2300m ascent. 2900m descent.
Saturday July 17, 2021

The Broken Goat 52km is one of BC's toughest and most scenic ultra's. Participants must be prepared for a long and strenuous journey in remote alpine terrain and also must be comfortable self-supporting themselves until they reach Grey Mountain - 23km into the race.

The 52k point to point route takes place on the beautiful “7 Summits” high alpine trail while accessing several peaks & ridges via short, steep side trips along the way.

The race proceeds along the peaks and ridges in the following order:  Mt Plewman (2241m/7350ft),
Old Glory Mtn (2376m/7800ft), Unnecessary Ridge (2100m/6,888ft),  Record Ridge (1760m/5,772ft) Granite Mtn (2036m/6700ft), and finishes by climbing up Red Mtn  (1591m/5218ft).

Runners will have beautiful 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains and run on a mix of buff singletrack and technical rocky & rooty trails. The first peak in the race is a true alpine route, with no designated trail, meaning runners have to make their way, choose their footing carefully and follow the flagging only.  It is the responsibility of the race participant to be aware of your surroundings and of other runners, especially when running in true mountain terrain.
Approximately 43km of the 53km route is on beautiful alpine singletrack with approximately 1km of FSR intermixed in sections and 5km of FSR on Molly's Road which links into the newly built and incredible "Pay Dirt" singletrack trail. Runners will then descent very close to the finish line before making a final push on the trail network within Red Mountain.  You will be tired.  You will be close enough to visualize a beer in your hand, but there is not room to waffle!  The next 1.7km (457m/1500ft) climb up to the top of Red Mountain is often the hardest section for runners, this late in the race. For those who make it to the summit - they will enjoy the remaining 10km on flowy singletrack into the finish.  Then it's officially beer time!
Mountain weather is unpredictable, therefore we have a mandatory gear list and gear check for all 50k runners. Failure to meet the requirements will result in race organizers denying your start.  Please note this is for your safety.

25km. 1000m ascent. 1400m descent.
Sunday July 18, 2021

The Broken Goat 25km course follows the same start as the 50km course and includes the summit of Mount Plewman and the lower section of Red Mountain.

It is a challenging, point to point race that traverses along the beautiful “7 Summits” high alpine ridge trail and along Unnecessary Ridge, within the Rossland Range.  The course travels along the lofty ridge lines between Nancy Greene Summit and the turn off, down to Red Mountain Resort, offering 360 degree views and forming an unforgettable running experience.

Runners will be spoiled as the “7 Summits” is one of the premier trails in the West Kootenays.   Not to mention, the trail cruises at an average elevation of almost 2000m (6560ft).  Runners will want to save some legs for the demanding descent on a mix of forest service road and amazing single track which will lead them into the finish at the base of Red Mountain Resort.

Like the 50km route, runners must also be comfortable self-supporting themselves until they reach Grey MTN, which is approximately the halfway mark of 25km course.  Here they will access the aid station.
Race organizers have a mandatory gear list and gear check for all 25km runners and failure to meet the requirements will result in race organizers denying your start.

12km. 720m ascent. 720m descent.
Friday July 16, 2021

The Broken Goat 12km course starts off at the base of Red Mountain Resort before taking runners straight up a super steep single track trail to the top of Red Mountain.

We promise it will be worth the effort, as runners can expect to run on some of the nicest single track this area has to offer!  Mega views.  Mega fun!

You'll start a swoopy, swishy and sweet switchback descent which will lead you into some fun rolling terrain.  Just be ready for the surprise climb near the end because just when you think you can smell the BBQ, you'll have to hoof your arse up one last climb before making your big debut back to the finish line at the base of Red Mountain.

Details

The following information has been created following our 2021 Special Operation Plan (SOP) which has been reviewed and adapted in accordance with the guidance of Interior Health and the Minister of Health in our province.

Our SOP takes into account the current Provincial Health Orders and the highest safety procedures for our participants, volunteers, staff and community.

We will be monitoring the rollout of vaccinations, the current PHO's and adapting our plan as the year unfolds, with the hopes that we will have more flexibility as we get closer to race day. Please click HERE to review our SOP in more detail.

Thank you for supporting and trusting PACE Trail Series with your running experience in 2021.

Start Line

There will be no pre-race briefing at the start line. This briefing will be provided in a pre-recorded fashion (delivery method to be determined).

We are proposing one of two options for the Start Lines and this will be determined at a later date:

  • Staged starts of 50 people or fewer
  • A rolling start with runners assigned time windows to arrive at the start, meaning only a handful of runners would start at the same time.
  • Using either method, runners will be assigned a starting time, based on ranking from Ultra Sign-up which will seat the faster runners first. This helps facilitate better positioning and less potential passing throughout the race.
  • Runners will maintain a 2m radius around themselves at all times.
  • All runners are permitted to wear face covering from the start until enough social distancing is established.
Cut-Off's
Broken Goat offers three distance events over three days: 50km, 25km & 12km.
The following are the cut off and finish line closing times.

The 50km event has three cut-off times.
  • The first cut-off is at the 1st aid station (Grey Mountain) at 2:00pm, allowing participants 8hrs to complete approx. 33.5km of the full 50km course.
  • The second cut-off time is at the 2nd aid station (Red Mountain) at 3:00pm, allowing participants 9hrs to complete approx. 38km of the full 50km course.
  • The third cut-off time is the finish line at 5pm. This allows participants 11hrs to complete the full 55km distance.
  • The cut-off times will be adjusted accordingly, should we require staggered starts.
  • If a runner arrives at a checkpoint after the published cut-off time, they will be discontinued taken back to the finish line. Please note: if a runner arrives late to aid 2, yet are still deemed in good form form our medic staff, they will be encouraged to run from the 2nd aid station to the base of Red Mountain (aid 3) as extraction from Grey Mountain is limited to those in distress.

The 25km event has two cut-off times.
  • The first cut-off is at the 1st aid station (Grey Mountain) at 10:45am, allowing participants 3:45hrs to complete approx. 12.5km of the full 25km course.
  • The second cut-off time is the finish line at 12:30pm, allowing participants 6.5hrs to complete the full 25km distance.

The 12km event has one cut-off time.
  • The first cut-off is at the finish line, allowing participants 3.5hrs to complete the full 12km distance.
  • The cut-off times will be adjusted accordingly, should we require staggered starts.

Aid-Stations / On-Course

  • Self-serve food and beverage options will not be available to runners. Aid Station volunteers will safely prepare portions, or a pre-packaged selection of items will be distributed.
  • Distancing guidelines will be in place for runners waiting to access the Aid Station.
  • Fluid distribution will be modified to ensure minimal contact.
  • Runner extractions will occur as usual, with all Covid protocols in place (everyone wearing masks, etc). On-course crew will be provided with safety kits including sanitizer, disposable masks, disinfectant wipes, etc.
  • Further, we will allow 50km runners to use drop bags, should aid stations not be deemed a safe choice at the time of the event.
  • 25km & 10km runners may need to run self-supported, if aid-stations are not permitted by the time the event takes place.
  • Distancing guidelines will be in place for runners waiting to access drops bags, as well.
Broken Goat 50k & 25k runners must be comfortable self-supporting themselves until they are in-between Grey MTN and Granite MTN, (approx. half way mark) due to the remoteness of this high alpine race.

Registration

We love the PACE family and appreciate your loyalty and support. We want to do our best to offer a policy that offers better future credits for our racers, so we have updated our policies and ask that you please take a moment to read through it before signing up.  Click HERE for the nitty gritty :)
2020 DEFERRALS

1. An email will be sent out to all 2020 registered Broken Goat racers on or before January 15, 2021.
2.You will receive an email from us via Ultra Sign-up with the choice to defer 75% of your 2021 race entry fees into one of the following years: 2021, 2022 or 2023.
3. Your priority / early registration only allows you to register for the same distance you were registered for in 2020. This is because we have race caps per our permits and want to ensure everyone who was registered last year has the same opportunity.
4. If you want to by-pass the priority / early registration, you can take your chances and try to register with the general public to snag a spot in a difference distance that way. Should the event fill prior to you getting a spot, however - you will not have a spot in the 2021 race. Your deferral will then automatically be applied in 2022 or 2023, depending on which year you choose to register again. This includes anyone who was registered in 2020 and wants to register for the 3 day stage race.
5. Priority / early registration applies for 2021 ONLY.
6. You have until January 25th  to complete your early registration. After January 25th, your priority invitation will expire and you will need to register with the general public.
7. Based on the number of runners rolling deferrals over to 2021, will determine how many (if any) spots we will have open for the public in 2021.
8. If there are spots available, registration will open to the public on February 1, 2021.
